The commander of the Somali National Army’s Ground Forces, Brigadier General Sahal Abdullahi Omar, visited several recently liberated areas in Lower Shabelle on Thursday, underscoring the military’s push to secure territorial gains after a series of successful operations against Al-Shabaab.
Brigadier General Sahal toured frontline communities and military positions reclaimed during recent offensives by Somali forces and allied local militias. The visit focused on assessing operational readiness, evaluating troop morale, and reviewing stabilization plans in zones previously used as militant strongholds.
The areas, located in the strategic Lower Shabelle region south of Mogadishu, have long served as key corridors for Al-Shabaab attacks and logistical movements toward the capital.
Control of Lower Shabelle is critical to securing the capital and restoring safe passage along vital agricultural and transport routes. The region’s proximity to Mogadishu and access to the coast have made it a recurring battleground in Somalia’s long-running conflict.
During meetings with field commanders, General Sahal reviewed security needs, logistical challenges, and plans to prevent militant reinfiltration. Military sources say he praised the “discipline and sacrifice” of troops and local forces, crediting improved coordination for recent successes.
“The gains achieved show what unified action and determination can deliver in the fight against extremism,” he told officers, according to officials present.
Somali forces, supported by clan-based militia units, have conducted targeted ground assaults in recent weeks, dislodging Al-Shabaab fighters from several rural strongholds. Military officials say operations are now shifting from clearance to stabilization—a phase aimed at establishing a lasting government presence in reclaimed areas.
General Sahal urged soldiers to remain vigilant and strengthen defensive positions to prevent militant regrouping. “We must ensure these areas do not slip back into enemy hands,” he was quoted as saying.
The visit reflects Mogadishu’s intensified campaign to degrade Al-Shabaab’s rural network as part of a nationwide stabilization effort. The federal government has vowed to follow military victories with governance outreach, police deployment, and restored public services to win local trust and deter insurgent resurgence.
Lower Shabelle, a rich agricultural belt and transit corridor, is viewed as a litmus test for the state’s ability to hold territory and reestablish authority beyond urban centers.
Operations in Lower Shabelle remain ongoing, with Somali forces preparing for further clearing missions while reinforcing newly secured zones. Authorities say the next phase will focus on deploying administration officials, reopening schools and clinics, and restoring trade routes.
